Check the grill and cooking location
Read the appliance instructions for permitted fuel, fuel support and maximum load. If pellets can fall through the grate, do not improvise a tray or block the vents. Ask the grill supplier whether an approved pellet accessory is available.
Choose an open outdoor location on a stable, non-combustible surface, away from doors, windows and combustible materials. A garage, tent or partly enclosed balcony is not an outdoor cooking space.
Prepare, light and cook
With the grill cold, remove old ash and check that bottom vents are clear. Load dry pellets as directed by the appliance manufacturer. Use a grill-approved starter exactly as its label directs; never add starter to a burning fire.
Let flames settle before cooking. The wait depends on airflow, the grill and the fuel load; there is no universal lighting time. Keep the fire attended and follow the appliance instructions if more fuel is needed.
Finish the session
Follow the grill’s shutdown procedure and leave it outdoors while fuel and ash cool completely. Do not move a hot grill indoors. Dispose of fully cooled ash safely and keep unused pellets dry in a sealed bag.
